The “IT Room Utilization (ITRU)” - Conference Paper, was selected & exhibited as Poster, at the 2023 OCP Global Summit & Future Technologies Symposium, in San Jose, California.

The ITRU Metrics are a Set of Metrics and Methods, which standardizes the way Power Utilization, Space Occupancy and Power/Space usage are measured in Data Center facilities and Telco Hubs.

It helps in measuring the current state of the Data Room in terms of Utilization, Occupancy and Power/Space usage ratio, and also may assist to potentially optimize the Data Room with potential direct impact on Energy Efficiency and PUE.

These metrics are also useful, in order to project the maximum Design PUE value, during the Data Room growth process, and to determine the projected Site Infrastructure (UPS and IT Cooling) stranded capacity.

The ITRU metrics can be used for these main purposes:

  1. Measuring the current state of the Data Room utilization and occupancy, at different levels: POD, Room, Data Center (Multi-Room).

  2. Calculating the Potential utilization/optimization of the Data Room, with the current Occupancy.

  3. Projecting the Rack/Room Potential Optimization, and calculating IT Space waste.

  4. Projecting the Maximum Design PUE Value (*), and the projected stranded Site Infrastructure capacity.

(*) To determine the Design PUE Value, simulations need to be run.

About the Open Compute Project (OCP)

Source: www.opencompute.org

The Open Compute Project Foundation is a rapidly growing, global community whose mission is to design, use, and enable mainstream delivery of the most efficient designs for scalable computing.

The Open Compute Project Foundation provides a structure in which individuals and organizations can share their intellectual property with others and encourage the IT industry to evolve.

In designing commodity hardware that is more efficient, flexible, and scalable, the OCP is redefining tech infrastructure. Together, we’re throwing off the shackles of proprietary, one-size-fits-all gear.

The 2024 OCP Global Summit theme is "From Ideas to Impact". This encapsulates the transformative journey at the heart of the Open Compute Project. This year’s theme reflects OCP’s commitment to fostering innovation that transcends theoretical discussions and manifests into real-world solutions. As the pace of technological evolution accelerates and development cycles shorten, our industry is forced to rapidly respond to emerging trends and needs. By harnessing the collective expertise of our global community, we turn visionary ideas into groundbreaking technologies that drive openness, efficiency, sustainability, scalability and growth in the data center industry. Our focus honors the relentless pursuit of progress and the profound impact that OCP’s community-driven innovation can achieve. OCP transforms concepts into impactful advancements.

The OCP Summit is the premier event uniting the most forward-thinking minds in open IT Ecosystem development. The Summit presents a unique platform for our Community from around the globe to share their insights, foster partnerships and showcase cutting-edge advancements in open hardware and software.

OCP Summits are held twice each year - in the Spring the OCP Regional Summit is held in Europe, with a specific focus on the challenges and solutions unique to that region of the globe; while the OCP Global Summit is our largest, held in the Fall each year in San Jose, California.

The OCP Future Technologies Symposium (FTS) is intended to bring to the OCP Community a forward-looking funnel of ideas and talent, with a focus on solving future problems facing the industry, and accelerate productization through partnerships and collaborative R&D.
